Today, June 22, 2016, Mayor Bill de Blasio of NYC approved a bill that will authorize public schools, shelters, and prisons to provide pads and tampons free of charge to women and girls. This is indeed a milestone as it will be the first city in the country to do so. Most of us are used to purchasing our necessary hygiene products for each month without realizing that it is a luxury for many. NYC made the right decision in confirming that access to menstrual hygiene products is a fundamental health right and not a luxury. One shouldn’t have to reuse the same tampon/pad for days or have to use toilet paper to protect oneself.
Let’s hope that this reciprocates in all the states throughout the country!
